In order to help determine our users’ needs, we went to the Carnegie Library in Oakland to conduct informal interviews with seniors. We asked them if and how they currently use cell phones and cameras. A summary of our findings from this first-hand research is presented below.

Summary of Interviewee Demographics
  • Interviewed 19 people
  • 10 Male and 9 Female
  • Ages 60-85 (estimated)
  • High-functioning to declining
User Research Findings
  • 13 of 19 own a camera; of those, 3-4 are digital
  • 9 of 19 own cell phones
  • All have received photos via email before
  • Current methods of sharing photos:
    • prints via mail
    • prints in person
    • email (very few)
  • Typically taking photos of family, vacations, and friends
  • Most did not need or want cell phones, unless in emergency
  • All use home telephones and get togethers for keeping in touch with family. A small number used email and a minority used cell phones, often because of long distance plans.
  • Most still prefer to have prints to hold in hand over digital photos.
