Overview

This project emerged through a collaboration with the Journal of International Affairs at Columbia University and Jem Porcaro, a consultant at the United Nations. The Journal previously had only published academic essays and the occasional black and white photo essay. For the Spring 2005 issue, we tried something new — a visual insert that would tell a compelling story for their audience.

In keeping with the theme for the upcoming issue, Financing Development: Challenges for the Millennium Development Goals, the story aimed to depict the role that access to modern energy services has in achieving the goals set up by the UN in 2000. The resulting insert is an illustrative case study of how the multifunctional platform project has successfully utilized energy as a means of underpinning efforts to achieve the MDGs in Mali.
